Coca-Cola has revealed today that General Fiasco’s Owen Strathern, Olympic Swimming hopeful Melanie Nocher and Cool FM DJ Pete Snodden will help select the inspirational young people – Future Flames – in Northern Ireland who will become Coca-Cola Olympic Torchbearers during the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay next year.

Owen Strathern, Melanie Nocher and Pete Snodden will be joined on the judging panel by youth worker Peter Wray from Youth Action NI and a representative from Coca-Cola. They will have the difficult task of picking Northern Ireland’s most exceptional young people who they believe should be celebrated with the once in a lifetime opportunity to carry the Olympic Flame.

It’s been five weeks since Coca-Cola’s London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay public nomination campaign closed. Entries are now being counted and verified before the judges make the final selection of Northern Ireland’s 40 torch bearers who use their passion in areas like sport and physical activity, music and dance, and community and the environment; to spread happiness in their local communities.

The campaign is backed by music artists Dizzee Rascal, The Wanted, Eliza Doolittle, You Me At Six and General Fiasco.

General Fiasco’s Owen Strathern:

“It’s so cool that the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay is coming to Northern Ireland and we are proud to be part of it all! This has been a once-in-a-life-time experience for teens to get involved with Coke’s Future Flames Campaign and I can’t wait to read all the inspirational stories people have submitted – it’s going to be a tough call picking the finalists.

Melanie Nocher commented:

“It’s a great privilege to be involved with Coca-Cola’s ‘Future Flames’ campaign and I am truly honoured to be chosen as a judge.  As a sportsperson, the Olympics is obviously the pinnacle of my sporting career and it brings me great pleasure to help choose some of Northern Ireland’s most inspirational teens so that they can carry the Olympic Flame next year.

Pete Snodden, Cool FM, commented:

“Young people are doing amazing things every day across Northern Ireland, but they just aren’t getting the recognition they deserve. Coca-Cola’s Future Flames campaign will help redress the balance by giving young people in Northern Ireland the chance to be involved in the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay. I’m physced to have been invited to help Coca-Cola choose Northern Ireland’s Future Flames and I can’t wait to get started.

Peter Wray, Youth Action NI, commented:“I see young people do amazing things every day, yet no one hears about the positive contribution they make to their communities. I feel honoured to be part of a campaign which is helping recognise the great things young people do in Northern Ireland and I’m looking forward to reading all the inspirational stories people have submitted over the last few months.”

James Williams, Director, Olympic Torch Relay, Coca-Cola said:

“Since Coca-Cola launched the Future Flames campaign back in July we’ve been overwhelmed by the number of stories about exceptional young people that have been submitted throughout Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK. We know that young people do great things in their communities every day, but it’s truly inspiring when you read about all the different ways young people use their interests and passions for sport, music, dance and the environment, to spread happiness and make a positive difference to others.

“I am immensely proud that as Presenting Partners of the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay, Coca-Cola is able to celebrate these young people by giving them the once in a lifetime opportunity to carry the Olympic Flame during the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay.”
